Welcome
This annual bursary for deaf and disabled artists working in the visual arts has been established in memory of Adam Reynolds by Shape in collaboration with his friends and family. Each year the bursary will be offered in conjunction with a residency in a visual arts venue and this year's bursary will be offered with a 3-month residency with Spike Island in Bristol, a place of production and exhibition of contemporary art and design. The Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary 2009-10 is made possible by The Garfield Weston Foundation.
*NEWSFLASH APRIL 2010*
We are delighted that Antony Gormley, one of Britain’s best known and internationally significant artists, has accepted our invitation to be the Patron of the Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary. Click here for more information.
*NEWSFLASH OCTOBER 2009* Aaron Williamson announced as this year's winner.
Aaron Williamson was chosen from artists across the UK to be announced as the recipient of this year’s Bursary.
He was selected from an enormously strong field of 35 applicants. The selection panel, which included representatives from Spike Island, Camden Arts Centre, Shape and Sally Booth, the previous Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary recipient, commented, "the standard of work has never been higher, and it was not an easy decision – this is testimony to the talent that is out there amongst disabled artists". About Adam
Adam was a sculptor, curator, teacher, arts advisor, husband and father to two children. He was active in the Disability Arts sector and served for many years on the Board of Shape as Chair and later as a trustee. Adam was a generous in his support for other artists, and this bursary is offered in the same spirit as that which guided the Adam Gallery that he ran for many years.
The bursary is intended to provide time, space and support for artists to work in an open-ended way without pressure to deliver a particular outcome. The successful artist will be selected from an open submission, on the strength of their work and proposal. Each year the residency will be located in a new venue around the UK.
