Residency
2010 Bursary: Aaron Williamson
Aaron Williamson announced as this year’s winner.
Aaron Williamson was chosen from artists across the UK to be announced as the recipient of this year's Bursary.
He was selected from an enormously strong field of 35 applicants. The selection panel, which included representatives from Spike Island, Camden Arts Centre, Shape and Sally Booth, the previous Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary recipient, commented, "the standard of work has never been higher, and it was not an easy decision – this is testimony to the talent that is out there amongst disabled artists".
Aaron began his artistic career in sculpture but quickly moved into performance and video art. Now aged 48, he fits the bill as a 'mid-career' artist still seeking and exploring new areas and ideas. Aaron said, "The Adam Reynolds Bursary at Spike Island will allow me to continue this process of exploration and discover ways in which to revitalise my artistic work".
Shape are co-ordinating the Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary for a third year; building on the strengths of the previous two years’ residencies in Camden Arts Centre and the Bluecoat in Liverpool. This year they will be working in partnership with Spike Island in Bristol, a place of production and exhibition of contemporary art & design.
Aaron Williamson's residency will run throughout the Spring of 2010
at Spike Island, where there
will be opportunities to see the work in progress in open studio events during
the residency.
