The annual bursary offered to support a disabled artist working in the visual arts

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How will the bursary impact on my benefits?

The £5,000 bursary is tax free and is not a ‘payment’ for work. Shape will work with the successful artist to make sure that any benefits you may receive are not affected by the receipt of the bursary monies.

How can I spend the bursary money?

The bursary fund is intended to provide the time and space for you to work. How you choose to spend the £5,000 is up to you. You may wish to spend it on paying for your living expenses so that you can free up your time to spend making work. Alternatively you may wish to spend it on equipment or materials or to pay assistants or technicians to support you in realising a particular project. You should outline how you wish to spend the £5,000 in your proposal document.

Will my access costs be covered?

In discussion with the artist, Shape will make all reasonable effort to ensure that access costs are covered.

Do I need to be registered disabled to apply?

No. There is no longer such a thing as registering as a disabled person. Under the Disability Discrimination Act, people define themselves whether or not they are disabled. For more information vist the Disability Rights Commission website.

Do I have to be in the studio every day?

The amount of time over the course of the residency that you choose to spend in the studio space provided is entirely up to you and will depend on your own personal practice. There are no set rules.
